Desperate race against death led to Kewanee getting ‘iron lung’

Kewanee’s ‘iron lung’ is on display at the Kewanee Historical Society museum. The Drinker-Collins respirator, known as a negative pressure ventilator, was purchased for local polio victims with a community fund drive in 1937. It enabled a person (represented in the display by a mannequin) to breathe when normal muscle control had been lost or the work of breathing exceeded the person’s ability.
